GL Garrad Hassan launches offshore CoE study

UK: GL Garrad Hassan has launched a project to cut the cost of energy from offshore wind farms through the use of new technologies.

'Project Force' (turbine optimisation For Reduced Cost of Energy) study will concentrate on advanced control and rotor technologies in the design of low cost offshore wind turbines in the 7-10MW range.

The main avenues the company is investigating include sophisticated control systems, such as individual pitch control, multivariable and Lidar-assisted systems, together with high-speed and structurally flexible downwind rotor blades plus integrated turbine, controller and support structure design.

The consultancy will also examine the use of topology optimisation software to improve the main structural components of wind turbines.

Tim Camp, head of GL Garrad Hassan’s turbine engineering competence centre said: "The results of Project Force will enhance the support we can offer our clients, as well as leading the industry towards a cost-sustainable future."

The results of the project are expected late this year.
