UK government approves 504MW project off Suffolk coast

UK: The UK government has given the go-ahead to SSE and RWE for the 504MW Galloper offshore wind farm.

Galloper's sister project Greater Gabbard being installed

The 140-turbine Galloper project is an extension of the existing 504MW Greater Gabbard development, it is planned for a site in the North Sea, 27 kilometres off the Suffolk coast.

It is scheduled for completion in 2017, to be grid-connected via onshore infrastructure at Sizewell.

A Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) spokesperson said Galloper would "generate major investment in Suffolk" of £18-20 million (EUR 21-23 million) and create around 600 jobs across the country.

Jim Smith, SSE's managing director for renewables, said: "We very much welcome this decision, which provides important reassurance about Decc's commitment to offshore wind." SSE expects to make a final investment decision in the first half of 2014.
