Repower announces Ontario factory location

CANADA: Repower has chosen the town of Welland in southern Ontario for its blade factory, bringing 200 new jobs to the town.

Earlier this year, the German manufacturer announced plans to build a factory in Ontario following a contract with developer WPD Canada. The plant will enable Repower to meet the 50% local content requirement under the province's feed-in tariff (FIT) programme.

WPD Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Germany's WPD, has FIT contracts for six wind projects in Ontario totalling 105MW.

Repower's Ontario manufacturing facility will initially employ 175 people, the company said, with the potential for that to increase as the business grows.

However, the announcment comes as the company is set to make job cuts throughout the remainder of its operations. Last week, Repower said it would be cutting 750 jobs by the end of the year.
