Vestas and GE market leaders with 11.8%, says new study

WORLDWIDE: Vestas and GE have been have ranked equal first in Bloomberg New Energy Finance's (BNEF) list of the top 10 wind OEMs.

The report gave both GE and Vestas an 11.8% share of the market, with Siemens in third place on 11% and Eneron in fourth on 7.2%.

However, GE is unlikely to remain at number one after this year is taken into account. BNEF said more than 96% of GE turbines commissioned in 2012 were in the US market.

Additionally, BNEF said Iberdrola had been overtaken by Guodian subsidiary Longyuan as the world's number one owner of wind capacity.

The BNEF rankings follow similar studies by consultancies Make and BTM. BTM rated GE as number one on the back of the strong performance last year in the US.

Make put Vestas into the number one spot. It said it penalised GE over a shortage of grid-connected GE turbines in Brazil.

Speaking about the figures, Justin Wu, BNEF head of wind analysis, said: "2012 was a great year for Western manufacturers in terms of adding new capacity, particularly those with large exposure to the US market.

"Unfortunately, this boom was largely based on beating the deadline on an expiring subsidy and not on sustainable growth. As such, 2013 will look very different."
