The data for BTM's list of the top 5 wind manufacturers for 2012 showed Vestas slipped down to second place in terms of 2012 capacity installed. Behind it was Siemens, which has moved up from ninth place.
BTM said GE's strong showing was based on its performance in the US, which became the world's number one market in 2012.
Another finding of the report was the fall from grace of Chinese manufacturers. Most notable was troubled former number two manufacturer Sinovel, which has fallen to ninth place with only 2.9% market share. Goldwind's market share has also dwindled from 8.8% in 2011 to 6% in 2012.
Suzlon Group has managed to creep into the top 5. But this has been fuelled by its German subsidiary Repower, which on its own had a global market share of nearly 5%.
Overall, the BTM World Market Update 2012 report found a record 44.95GW had been installed. However, this is likely to fall this year by around 10%.
BTM's final report has coincided with the publication of Make Consulting's analysis of the top global turbines OEMs. Unlike BTM, Make's Global Wind Turbine OEM 2012 Market Share report is based on new grid-connected capacity.
As it did last year, Make ranked Vestas as the number one wind OEM. However, it added that GE would have taken this spot if it had managed to connect its newly installed capacity in Brazil.
Other disparities between the two reports included Gamesa's position. BTM gives it a 6.1% share as opposed to Make's 8.2%. However, elsewhere the two lists are largely similar.
