DolWin3 will be the eighth Tennet grid project using direct current technology and the third grid connection for the wind farm cluster known as DolWin. The DolWin 3 project is scheduled to be finished in 2017.
The DolWind 3 cable system is designated to serve Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore projects.
Alstom said it will act as general contractor and build and deliver the converter station and the connecting cable system, both marine and land side with its partners, platform construction company Nordic Yards and cable supplier Prysmian.
Direct current voltage source conversion technology (±320 kV, 900 MW) will be used to bring the power generated at sea to shore via an 83-kilometre-long sea cable. The wind power will then be transported another 79 kilometres via a land cable from the coast to the Dörpen/West converter station in Lower Saxony. The grid connection will be delivered on a turnkey basis by Alstom.
Alstom also secured a five-year service contract that covers the complete offshore converter station, the platform and the entire onshore converter system. The service package includes complete repairs and maintenance, supply of replacement components and technical support via a hotline.
