Enercon and ATS aim beyond 200-metre tip height

WORLDWIDE: Enercon and hybrid tower/developer Advanced Tower Systems (ATS) have announced they are working on towers to provide total installation heights in excess of 200 metres.

Enercon's upcoming E115 2.5MW will have a 206.5m total tip height

German turbine maker Enercon will offer its latest 2.5MW E-115 (rotor diameter 115 metres) model developed for low wind conditions with concrete-steel hybrid towers reaching hub heights up to 149 metres. This adds up to a 206.5 metre total tip height. 

Until now 200 metres has been considered the maximum installation height. Due to aeronautical concerns some expert claim it to be a "legal" limit in some countries and wind markets such as Belgium and Germany.

A representative of ATS said at EWEA 2013 that his company is working on a project with 2.3MW Kenersys turbines featuring a 120-metre rotor diameter. The total installation height is believed to be in a similar range or higher than the Enercon turbine.

Dedicated low wind speed turbines in combination with high towers are increasingly considered crucial for exploiting many geographical locations in the world — such as forests — previously considered unfit for cost-effective power generation.
