Areva to install prototype M5000-135

EUROPE: Areva is to install the first prototype of the 135-metre rotor version of its M5000 5MW offshore turbine.

Areva's M5000

The first M5000-135 turbine will be installed at an onshore site near Bremerhaven, Germany. The existing version of the turbine has a 116-metre rotor.

When it is installed in Q3, the turbine will have a hub height of 130 metres. Plans for the new machine were originally announced by Areva in 2011.

According to chief technology officer René Balle, the turbine offers 8% extra annual yield at 9m/s average wind speed for sites similar to those along the French coast.

Besides longer and slender rotor blades, Areva added several additional design features, such as a new nacelle design aimed at easier assembly, improved serviceability, and enhanced health and safety performance.

The M5000 is a patented turbine concept, which was first introduced in 1997 by German engineering consultancy Aerodyn.
