"Renewables can lead the way out of the economic crisis (in Europe)," Podimata told delegates at the opening session of the annual EWEA event in Vienna.
Irish energy minister Pat Rabbite, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, noted that while the debate has begun, there is no consensus among the EU´s 27 member states about post-2020 targets.
Some countries just want a carbon target, he noted. Others, including Ireland, would like to continue along the lines of the 2020 targets, which see member states with 20% of energy from renewable sources that year.
