Other features include a 139-metre tower, which GE hopes will be suitable for forested areas in Europe and Canada. It has described the machine as the "world’s most efficient high-output wind turbine".
Speaking about the turbine launch, GE vice president of renewable energy Vic Abate said: "Our 2.5-120 is the first wind turbine that utilises the 'industrial internet' to help manage the intermittency of wind, providing smooth, predictable power to the world regardless of what Mother Nature throws its way.
"Analysing tens of thousands of data points every second, the 2.5-120 integrates energy storage and advanced forecasting algorithms while communicating seamlessly with neighbouring turbines, service technicians and customers."
However, GE faces a lot of competition in the low wind market. For example Enercon, Vestas, Nordex and Repower are already targeting this market with the E115, V128, MM3.2 and N117 turbines.
