Datang begins China's biggest wind farm

CHINA: Datang Renewables has begun construction of a 400MW wind farm, so far the largest single wind farm in China, near Chifeng city, north China's Inner Mongolia.

The Hanshan wind farm will consist of 267 1.5MW turbines. Datang would not name the supplier or the estimated date of completion.

The project costs CNY 4.1 billion ($651 million) in terms of total investment.

According to the Alu Ke’erqin county government, which hosts the wind farm, the Hanshan wind farm covers an area of 176 square kilometres. It is located in grassland near Greater Khingan Mountains, 960-1,200 metres above sea level. The wind resources average 8.26m/s annually, and the average power density is 563.6 watt/m2.

The recently released annual report China Wind Power 2012 says China will have 200GW to 300GW wind installations by 2020, and over 400GW wind installations by 2030 to account for 15 percent of China’s power supply mix.
