Brazil's A-3 and A-5 auctions have already attracted more than 15.7GW in new wind projects, said Maurício Tolmasquim, the president of the federal government's Energy Planning Company (EPE).
Tolmasquim said that following a delay, the A-5 auction would now go ahead, and possibly the A-3, depending on demand. "We have to hold the A-5 by law," he said.
According to the Tolmasquim there are more than 637 projects seeking inclusion in the auction. At the A-5 they will compete for contracts with large and medium sized hydroelectric projects.
The auctions this year have been delayed due to lack of demand from consumers. Tolmasquim said that EPE is still appraising the demand data and delays in the construction of some natural gas-fired thermoelectric plants that were due to come on-line in coming years and whose supply contracts need to covered by other sources.
A-5 offers contracts 20-year contracts for projects that must be delivered by 2017, A-3 for projects that must be built by 2015.
