Vestas was unable to confirm the actual number but said it would comprise around 3% of the total workforce in the US and Canada. Vestas has around 2,000 employees in the US.
In a statement the company said the "readjustment" was due to the slowdown in the market and the uncertainty over the production tax credit (PTC).
In March, Vestas warned it would cut 1,600 jobs in the US if the PTC was not renewed. However, Vestas was unable to say whether the Pueblo redundancies are part of this. In its last financial results Vestas said it would make a decision on the 1,600 jobs in November.
The Pueblo plant opened in 2010. It cost $210 million and at the time of its announcement, representing a 50% increase in global tower production.
The US tower sector is struggling with the expiry of the PTC and cheap imports from the Far East. Last week, Otter Tail Corp said it was negotiating to sell US wind tower manufacturer DMI Industries for $20 million. The company said that if the sale did not go through the plant would be closed.
