US wind capacity hits 50GW

UNITED STATES: The amount of wind power installed in the US has risen to just under 50GW proving the looming expiry of the PTC is giving a late-minute boost to the industry.

In its second quarter report, AWEA said 1.2GW had been installed through the three months preceding 30 June. This brings the total capacity to 49,802MW and the total number of 2012 installations to 2.8GW, a rise of 34% on 1H 2011.

The greatest activity was in Ohio, followed by Oklahoma, Illinois, California and Kansas. There are around 10GW under contraction in 30 states and Puerto Rico, an increase of 40% on 2011.

In Q1 wind energy rose in the US 1,695MW. The quarterly increase represented a rise of 52% compared to the same period in 2011.
