By the end of 2011, China had 62.4GW wind turbines installed but only 45GW of this was connected to the grid.
State Grid had connected 50.26GW wind turbines, up 33.5%year-on-year, according to Zhang Zhengling, spokesman of State Grid. The other installations pertained to China Southern Power Grid and Inner Mongolia Regional Grid.
Four regions have had over 5GW wind installations, which are the eastern part of Inner Mongolia, western part of Inner Mongolia (the eastern part belongs to State Grid, and the western part belongs to Inner Mongolia Regional Grid), Jiuquan of Gansu province, and northern Hebei province.
However, Mr. Zhang said, the four regions account for only 10 percent of China’s electric power consumption. They cannot use up the wind power generated locally.
In the first six months, China consumed 50.4 billion/kwh of wind power, up 26.8% year-on-year.
Zhang said China’s annual connection rate for wind turbine had grown at an average rate of 87% in the six years from 2006 to 2011, said Zhang.
