A new, innovative vessel aimed at the offshore wind market and designed by Norwegian shipyard, Fjellstrand, has been ordered by a new entrant in the rapidly-expanding offshore wind shipping industry.
World Marine Offshore is a new shipping company operating from the Danish port of Esbjerg. It has ordered six WindServer trimarans from Fjellstrand. The WindServer has been designed with the specific aim of improving access in adverse conditions to offshore wind farms, compared to what is possible using current-generation vessels.
WindServer has been engineered to provide improved fuel efficiency, stability and access. The six vessels will enter service with World Marine Offshore from next year, with delivery beginning in March.
The vessels in questions will be in two sizes – 25 and 30 metres – and designed to carry between 12 and 24 people. They will have a service speed of 25 knots.
Innovative aspects of the WindServer design include an integrated stabilising foil with no moving parts, ensuring low maintenance costs.
Fjellstrand’s success in selling its innovative design is thanks, in part, to extensive tank testing provided via the Carbon Trust’s offshore wind accelerator (OWA) programme. The WindServer was chosen as one of 13 shortlisted designs out of 450 entries received following a global call for new concepts in vessel design for the offshore wind market, issued by the Carbon Trust OWA programme.
The Carbon Trust is primarily funded by the British government. Its activities include support for offshore wind technological innovation and cost reduction.
