India outlines offshore study

INDIA: Satellite and historic data will be used to identify areas within Indian waters that may offer offshore wind potential, an insider within India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has confirmed.

However, only "very preliminary" progress has been made toward creating the regulatory framework that would allow offshore wind farms to be built, the insider added.

Both a steering and a technical committee have been established to guide India’s offshore wind policy, with both committees having met earlier this year. In addition, satellite and historic data from a variety of organizations has been collected and will be validated.

Shallow water sites off the country’s southern tip appear to have been accorded initial consideration, with an onshore 100-metre met mast due to be erected.

The Times of India has today reported that the ministry has also established an focusing on offshore wind development.
