India to build offshore turbines 'within five years'

INDIA: India will build its first offshore turbines within the next five years, according to a senior figure within the country's Centre for Wind Energy Technology.

According to IBN Live, CWET executive director Gomathi Nayagam said India would be looking to learn from European experience of installing offshore projects.

However, Nayagam added any European turbine designs would need to be tailored to Indian offshore conditions where wind speeds rarely exceed 6-7 metres per second.

Nayagam also said CWET is working with Scottish Development International to build a 100-metre mast to measure wind levels. Scottish Development signed a co-development deal with the Indian government in 2009.
