The contract follows an agreement last year between Strategic Marine and BMT to provide offshore wind vessels for the European market. The vessels will be designed by Southampton-based maritime design and engineering construction consultancy BMT Nigel Gee.
The Njord Offshore vessels will be 20 metres in length and their twin diesel engines will give them speeds in excess of 25 knots. The fleet will be delivered later this year and chartered by North Sea wind-farm operators.
Essex-based Njord, part of the Norsk Management UK group, specialises in operation and maintenance crew vessels for wind farms, and ships for hydrographic survey work in the project planning phase.
