87% of all offshore turbines installed in 2011 located in UK waters

UK: The majority - 87% - of all newly installed and grid-connected offshore wind turbines in 2011 were in British waters, according to the latest European Wind Energy (EWEA) annual offshore report.

Siemens supplied 80% of the MW installed offshore last year, while SSE (the former Scottish & Southern Energy) and RWE Innogy were the most active developers. Dong Energy were again the most active equity player in offshore wind power.

In 2011 EWEA said non-recourse debt financing for offshore wind farms in Europe increased by 40% on the previous year, from €1.46 billion to €2.05 billion, with three transaction – Meerwind, Globaltech 1 and Baltic 1 – closing in the last 12 months.

Once completed, EWEA said the nine offshore wind projects currently under construction in European waters will increase installed capacity by a further 2,375MW, bringing cumulative capacity in Europe to 6,188MW. Preparatory work has started on nine other offshore projects, with a cumulative installed capacity of 2,910MW.
