Dong gets Borkum Riffgrund II approval

GERMANY: At the end of December 2011, Dong Energy received approval for the 349MW, 97-turbine Borkum Riffgrund II wind farm to be located in German waters.

The project is planned for a site 37km north west of Borkuim Island in the North Sea, which is near the German—Dutch border. It is being developed jointly with PNE Wind, the original developer of Borkum Riffgrund II before PNE Wind sold its stake to Dong Energy.

"Together with Dong Energy we are very happy about the approval," said Thorsten Fastenau, head of PNE Wind’s offshore division.

He added: "This is now the fourth offshore wind project to be approved by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency with which we have been involved."

PNE plans to expand its offshore wind activities beyond Germany.

To date, Cuxhaven-based PNE Wind has been involved with the development and installation of 97 wind farms in Europe and the US, boasting a total combined capacity of 804MW.
