Jan De Nul wins offshore foundation contract

BELGIUM: Global dredging and marine engineering business, Jan De Nul Group, has moved into the offshore wind market, winning a contract for the design, construction and installation of 16 concrete foundations for an E.on offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea.

The foundations will be constructed in Zeebrugge, Belgium this spring and then towed to Sweden, beginning in May, for installation at the 48MW Karehamn wind farm site. The foundations will support 3MW Vestas turbines.

Dredging operations to make way for the 24.5 metre foundations will involve a vessel that will dredge a pit in the seabed, following which another ship will install a rock layer upon which the foundations will be laid.

The work should be completed by autumn 2012, with the wind farm due to begin operating in 2013.
