Vermont wind farm starts operation

US: First Wind's 40MW Sheffield Wind project in Vermont, USA, comprising 16 Clipper Liberty 2.5MW turbines, began operation today.

The wind farm has had to deploy a number of environmental mitigation and conservation measures that surpass usual industry standards, according to the company.

A complex system of ditches has been constructed to convey runoff to 27 storm water basins, while turbine pads are smaller than usual to protect wildlife including bear and moose.

The Vermont wind farm brings Boston-based First Wind’s US wind generation portfolio up to 735MW with a further 141MW of capacity under construction.
