The $230-million project will be built off Jeju Island, which is located off the country’s southern coast. Experts suggest the country could generate as much as 15.48GW through offshore wind.
The project is expected to come online in June 2014.
Doosan has been testing its WinDS3000 offshore turbine at Juji since 2009. The turbine is 3MW and has a blade length of 44 metres.
Doosan has been putting a lot of emphasis on offshore expansion. In March it announced plans to develop, build and launch a new 6-7MW offshore wind turbine for the European market.
South Korean companies are putting themselves into renewable-energy overdrive, with plans this year to invest the equivalent of KRW 4.5 trillion ($4.1 billion) in renewables — up 23% on 2010.
The country is midway towards its goal of building enough wind-power capacity to account for 9.2% of its renewable-energy mix.
