Wind wins majority allocation in South African renewables tender

SOUTH AFRICA: Wind energy is to get the lion’s share of the allocation for renewable energy under the government’s renewable energy independent power producer (IPP) tender process.

Companies will be able to bid for the finance, construction, operation, and maintenance of up to 1.85GW of wind projects.

Solar photovoltaic projects will get the next highest allocation with 1.45GW, while concentrated solar thermal will get 200MW and small hydro schemes 75MW.

The total renewable capacity of 3.73GW was higher than the 1.03GW previously indicated in the integrated resource plan (IRP) for the first procurement phase.

The Integrated Resource Plan 2010, approved in April, anticipates that renewable energy will contribute 17.8GW to South Africa's energy mix by 2019. Wind-energy generation is projected to increase from 200MW this year to 4.5GW by 2019.

However, there is still no news on the fate of the country’s REFIT programme.
