The said the Hartlepool Dock and Teeside port operator PD Ports wants to run the two as separate hubs, with the former specialising in offshore wind.

There is around 120 hectares available at the Hartlepool location.

PD Ports development director Paul Barker said the company was in talks with a number of renewables companies about setting up in the area.

One company that could consider moving to Hartlepool is French turbine manufacturer Alstom.

The company’s vice-president of offshore Frederick Hendrick has said it is looking at building an offshore facility to assemble and build its 6MW turbines on the eastern coast of northern England.

If the hub is developed it could service projects such as the Round 3 Hornsea and Dogger projects, with a capacity of 4GW and 9GW respectively.
