The turbine is located in Zhangbei county, north China’s Hebei province. The turbine tower is 60 meters high, and the blades are each 36 meters long.
The turbine actually consists of two 500kv generators, which are placed at the upper and lower storey of the tower. The turbine has whole-power rectifier inverter, with 600 volt output. It is able to work in a range of wind speed of 3-35 meters/second.
Different from traditional horizontal axis wind turbines, vertical axis wind turbines have low production costs, easier maintenance, steady output power and low noises, said Xu Jinquan, chief engineer of Guoneng.
Xu said the turbine adopts the permanent magnetic generator theory and MW-level turbines do not need external power source to start up.
Industry officials say this is a rewarding experiment to tap Chinese low and medium-layer wind resources.
Guoneng Wind Power Generation Co. Ltd. is jointly funded by China Electric Power Research Institute and Longji Power Co. Ltd. It has a production base in Changping district, Beijing. The 1MW prototype was made in January this year.
Guoneng chairman, Jiang Dalong said his company plans to have an annual production capacity of 3GW in five years.
