Masdar sets tender for 30MW Abu Dhabi project

UAE: Masdar Power, the Abu Dhabi-owned renewable energy investment vehicle, has put out a tender seeking companies to build a 30MW wind power plant on Sir Bani Yas island, 250 kilometers south west of Abu Dhabi City.

Sir Bani Island is the location of the only turbine operating in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) so far, an 850kW Vestas machine installed in 2004. This despite a wind resource estimated at around 1GW for the region.

Construction is set to begin before the end of the year.

Meray Atef, executive, media planning at Masdar said: "Masdar is conducting tests for available wind in various parts of the UAE, these are at a very early stage."

The move comes as part of the government strategy to generate 7 percent of its power from renewable sources by 2020.

Internationally, Masdar Power’s projects include a stake in the 1GW London Array offshore facility and a 6MW onshore project in the Seychelles.
