The state’s Board of Public Utilities has said developers have until June 14 to submit applications to build wind projects off the New Jersey coast.
Last year, New Jersey signed off legislation directing the state's public utilities commission to help develop 1.1GW of offshore wind projects.
Speaking about the latest move, New Jersey governor Chris Christie said: "The wind power movement is providing us with a unique opportunity to advance energy as an industry.
"By doing so, we have the ability to leverage our tremendous resources with groundbreaking technologies, allowing New Jersey to increase its use of renewable energy sources while advancing an industry that will lead to long term job creation."
Earlier this month, Offshore developer Fishermen’s Energy has said it has secured the final state approval for the development of a 25MW test project in New Jersey waters.
