North Carolina approves 300MW Iberdrola wind farm

UNITED STATES: Iberdrola subsidiary Atlantic Wind has been granted approval to build a 300MW wind farm in North Carolina.

The Desert Wind Power Project would be on private agricultural land near Elizabeth City in Pasquotank and Perquimans Counties in north eastern North Carolina.

If the project goes ahead it could become the state’s first large-scale development.

However, Atlantic Wind will need to obtain federal, state and local permits before construction can begin. It has been planning the project since 2009.

North Carolina is also being looked at by offshore developers.

A study released in September said the state had huge offshore potential. Offshore wind farms positioned around the densely populated East Coast could provide half the energy needed to power that region.
