In December last year, a request for interest (RFI) was issued regarding the potential development of wind projects covering 2,600 square miles off the Massachusetts coast.
According to BOEMRE, the decision to reduce this area was made following the raising of concerns by the state’s fishing industry and the Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick.
Commenting on the decision, BOEMRE director Michael Bromwich said: "We have heard significant concerns from the people of Massachusetts and we have acted on those concerns.
"BOEMRE is committed to continuing the public engagement process as we look to identify the potential areas for offshore energy development in federal waters south of Massachusetts."
BOEMRE said 11 companies had registered an interest in developing projects in the area.
