Pakistan
In Pakistan, 14 independent power producers plan financial closure by end-2011 on projects totalling 700MW. In the next two years, the Pakistani government envisions actual installation of 150MW of wind.
Nepal
The Nepalese government has announced plans to set up a 20MW project and is examining tax exemptions for the import of machinery and equipment needed for wind energy projects. It has also taken steps towards a national wind energy policy. Charus Development Nepal, Indian wind turbine supplier Suzlon and AGA Middle East have submitted proposals for projects with combined capacity of 200MW.
Sri Lanka
The National Energy Policies and Strategies of Sri Lanka document seeks the gradual increase of renewables. Hopes are now that wind from the Kalpitiya peninsula, Mannar Island, the Jaffna peninsula and the central highlands can be tapped. The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates about 25GW of potential wind generation in the island state but, due to grid limitations, only 200MW is feasible. Today, a sole 3MW pilot project at Hambantota is installed.
Bangladesh
A lack of reliable wind speed data has kept Bangladesh from progressing beyond a pilot 900kW grid-connected project in the Muhuri dam area that was commissioned in 2004. But the Bangladesh Power Development Board hopes to implement a 100MW offshore wind project at Anwara Upazila, in Chittagong district.
