Employment increased from 4,800 to 9,200 between 2007/8 to 2009/10. The overall UK employment level shrunk during the same period by 3.4%.
The report found that of 10,800 employees working in the wind and marine energy sectors, 56% is associated with large-scale onshore wind, followed by 29% in offshore wind.
7-8% of this number are employed in small-scale wind. A similar proportion works in wave and tidal energy.
The study was jointly commissioned by RenewableUK and EU Skills from Warwick University’s Institute for Employment Research, and Cambridge Econometrics.
In September, RenewableUK warned that 50,000 jobs could be at risk if manufacturers base their offshore wind operations outside the UK.
It was responding to news that only 20% of the construction contractors on the 300MW Thanet offshore wind farm were UK-based.
