Vestas targets Eastern European growth with new Romanian office

ROMANIA: Vestas has opened a new office in Romania as a result of the country's growing investment in renewables.

Vestas said the office, which will be located in Bucharest, will also run the company’s activities in other Eastern European markets.

In 2010, Vestas installed 43.66MW in Romania, as part of the country’s push to expand its wind energy capacity.

Romania’s cumulative installed capacity amounted to only 14MW at end-2009. However, recently the Romanian Wind Energy Association (RWEA) forecast the country’s overall capacity would rise above 500MW by the end of 2010.

The RWEA forecasts the country’s cumulative wind capacity could amount to 5GW by 2020.

Catalina Dragomir, Vestas Romania’s director of sales, said: "We have served our customers in Romania well, but this new office will give us and our partners a solid presence here and also support our efforts to participate in important national debates about wind energy policy in Romania."

Vestas is not the only manufacturer building projects in the country. Last week, GE has signed a deal with Monsson Alma to supply 35MW for two projects in south-eastern Romania.

In December, Enel brought online the 34MW Agighiol wind farm, located in the Valea Nucarilor municipality close to the city of Tulcea. The project is composed of 17 2MW Gamesa turbines.
