GWEC secretary general Steve Sawyer announced the figures at the Husum Wind Energy show. He added although the US market was likely to decline this year, this shortfall would be made up by growth in China.
Sawyer also said the European wind market remained stable.
In its five-year market forecast, the GWEC believes wind power will double between 2010-to-2014 and reach over 400GW.
Sawyer said: "As wind power is becoming more competitive, it is rapidly expanding beyond the traditional markets in North America and Europe. In fact, around half of the growth is now happening in emerging economies and developing countries.
"We are seeing very encouraging signs from countries in Latin America, including Brazil, Mexico and Chile, as well as Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa."
A longer-term outlook for global wind power growth will be presented by GWEC in October during its China Wind Power 2010 conference in Beijing. It will aim to show how 1,000GW of installed capacity could be operating worldwide by 2020.
