Previously the firm said it was considering Norway and two sites in Scotland, off Lewis and Aberdeenshire, for the installation of three to five floating turbines.
Now it has been reported that Statoil is looking at the US state as a test site for the commercial potential of its Hywind project. Statoil has said it will choose one of the three locations by 2011.
The development follow's an announcement by Maine’s public utilities company that it will begin solicitations for 30MW of floating, deepwater wind power in the next month.
Company representatives met with Scottish first minister Alex Salmond yesterday to discuss collaboration.
Statoil is already testing a floating 2.3MW Siemens turbine off the coast of Norway, at a depth of 220 metres.
