It thus has less than five percentage points to go to reach its target of 49% of total energy from green sources by 2020.
Under Sweden's National Renewable Energy Action Plan to meet the EU's 2020 renewables target, wind energy will supply 12.5TWh of electricity a year from 4.5GW of installed capacity, including 182MW offshore.
Policy is in place to ensure that developers can push well above twice that capacity through the permitting system by 2020.
According to the action plan, wind will get a boost from green certificates awarded for each megawatt hour of electricity produced. Among other measures already in place are subsidies to wind firms to support project development and to local communities to streamline project permitting.
