That represents a significant leap forward from the 14MW of installed capacity at the end of 2009. According to the plan, 43.5% of all electricity consumption is expected to come from renewable sources by 2020, up from 30% at present. Wind power will be Romania's second-most important renewable source of electricity behind hydroelectric power.
The Romanian Wind Energy Association is more optimistic, predicting installed wind capacity will be 5GW by 2020. "Our scenario makes sense," explains Dana Duica, the association's executive director.
"The transmission system operator Transelectrica says it could integrate 4GW of wind power into the grid today, so there are ten years to do something to improve the grid."
