Google signs up for Iowa clean energy

US: Google Energy LLC, the renewable energy subsidiary to the internet search engine giant, has completed a deal to buy clean energy from a wind farm in Iowa.

This is the first deal for Google Energy, which was formed last December. Urs Hoelzle, Google senior vice-president, operations, says: "We've been excited about this deal because taking 114MW of wind power off the market for so long means producers have the incentive and means to build more renewable energy capacity for other customers."

The company will buy the energy from the 114MW NextEra Energy Resources Story County II facility in Story and Hardin counties at a pre-determinted rate for the following 20 years. Google announced in 2007 that it would become carbon neutral.

This deal will also protects against future power price increases, says the company.
