The factory breaks Acciona’s dependency on LM Glassfiber. The Danish manufacturer has hitherto supplied the blades for Acciona 1.5MW machines—the AW-1.5.
The €25 million, 12,000m2 factory, located in the district of Lumbier, started operations earlier this year, employing 64 people and with plans to extend to 110 employees.
Following March 2010 orders from Mexico to supply and install 204 machines totalling 306MW Acciona now plans to employ 148 people by September this year.
By then the factory is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 450 units of 34m and 37.5m—enough to supply machines totalling 225MW.
Acciona describes blades as "a strategic component" to its business and says the factory was designed with a future extension in mind.
This would include the production of 56.7m blades for its 3MW machine, the AW-3000, which is currently at prototype stage.
While Acciona is not yet revealing when the extended capacity is likely to start, the town hall of Lumbier has confirmed it will sell 300,000m2 of adjacent land to Acciona "sometime soon".
