Penascal comprises two wind farms of 201.6 MW each: Penascal I was completed in 2009 and Penascal II was completed this year.
Together they use 168 Mitsubishi MHI 92 wind turbines, with a capacity of 2.4 MW each.
The installation on Texas's Kenedy Ranch includes a radar system designed to detect large flocks of migratory birds and shut down the turbines if low visibility endangers the wildlife.
Iberdrola said it spent over 4,000 hours researching the habits of birds in the region before it began construction.
During the project's development, the neighbouring 34,000 sq km King Ranch teamed up with conservation groups to sue Iberdrola over the potential for bird and bat kills. A judge dismissed the lawsuit.
Penascal I was at one point the subject of a lawsuit in GE's ongoing patent dispute with Mitsubishi, although GE eventually dropped the case particular to Penascal.
