MassCEC has approved grants totalling $2.66milion for projects totalling 23MW. 12MW of this consists of design and construction grants while the remainder goes towards feasibility studies.
The grants come under the organisation's 'Commonwealth Wind Community Scale Wind Initiative'.
The six projects receiving design and construction grants are in Scituate, Nantucket, Florida, Boston, and at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod.
The 12 feasibility grants go to the towns of Douglas, Duxbury, Hamilton, Swampscott, Millbury, Weymouth and Winchendon, the cities of Gloucester and Fall River, and private developers in Savoy, Cohasset and Westminster.
The announcement follows the government's decision to approve the 468MW Cape Wind project in Nantucket Bay.
Speaking about the decision to make the grants, Massachusetts energy and environmental affairs secretary Ian Bowles said the initiative was part of the state's efforts to develop 2GW by 2020.
