Tunisia opens 100MW wind tendering process

TUNISIA: The Tunisian Ministry of Industry and Technology has launched the first, prequalification round of a tender process to build 1200MW of generation capacity, including at least 100MW of renewable energy.

El Haouaria is on Tunisia's northern coast

The project is located near the northern town of El Haouaria and forms part of the Elmed project, a joint initiative between Tunisia and Italy.

The plan is to sell 400MW of the output to state utility the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) and export 800MW to Italy via a planned submarine interconnection. Both the cable and the "generation cluster" at El Haouria should be operational by 2018.

Initially, 16 companies and consortia expressed an interest, including Edison, Enel, Sorgenia and Med Energy, all from Italy; Marubeni and Sumitomo from Japan; International Power, British Gas and Nur Energy from the UK; Australia-based Macquarie Capital Group; and turbine manufacturer Siemens.

The closing date for applications is July 26.
