Seventy-three of the 100 Vestas 3MW wind turbines have been installed so far at the project, which is being built by Swedish utility Vattenfall.
Thanet will be the world's biggest operating offshore wind farm when it is completed later this year. The project first produced power from turbine number C08 on Sunday May 16 in wind speeds of 10-13 metres per second.
Ole Bigum Nielsen, Head of Offshore Projects at Vattenfall Wind Power says the start of electricity generation marks a major milestone. "Everyone has worked very hard and in spite of difficult winter weather we have kept to our schedule."
Thanet will have only just over a year to enjoy its claim to be the world's largest offshore project, as work is progressing to keep the 504MW Greater Gabbard project, in the North Sea, on track for completion in early 2012.
Siemens is supplying 140 3.6MW turbines to the site located 25 km off Suffolk. Owners SSE and RWE report that the first wind turbines have been installed and 69 of the foundations are in place. The remainder will be constructed over coming months.
