The company tied up a successful ‘open season' for space on the $3billion line, dubbed the Zephyr Power Transmission Projects, by signing a series of agreements with energy companies.
These are: Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy LLC for 2100 MW, BP Wind Energy NA Inc. for 500 MW and Horizon Wind Energy LLC for 400 MW.
TransCanada CEO Hal Kvisle says the open season results are "a clear indication" of industry support for new transmission, but points out there is still a significant regulatory challenge ahead.
He added: "Support from key markets and a positive regulatory environment are necessary before we start the significant siting and permitting activities required to construct the project."
Should Zephyr proceed to construction, major capital spending would start in late 2013 with a targeted timeframe for commercial operations of late 2015 or early 2016.
